Investment on Sanitation Will Boost Economic Growth by 10 per cent: German Agency

The state’s 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations, put together, generate around 11,500 tonnes of solid waste per day and 80.64 litres of waste water per person per day. Any investment on sanitation would increase the economic growth in the state by about 10 per cent, observed a German agency working on the AP State Sanitation Strategy (SSS).

With the draft already submitted to the Union urban development Ministry, under which the project is initiated, and the state standing bifurcated, the road ahead for SSS clearly depends on the priorities and policies of the two new state governments that will be formed.

As pointed out in a World Bank report, last year, 53 per cent of Indian households defecate in the open, one of the main aims the SSS is to create open-defecation free cities.

The project, undertaken by a German consultancy, has observed that any investment on sanitation in the state would increase the economic growth by about 10 per cent.
